Kenjutsu is the art of fighting with the Japanese sword and includes battojutsu, drawing and cutting the enemy, and Iaido drawing and cutting in one movement, closely related to battojutsu but developed during the Tokugawa (Edo) period into a form of "assaination". This class is being offered for those who are interested in Japanese Swordsmanship. Training will be conducted in a strict formal atmosphere, adhering to the etiquette of this art and Japanese Budo culture.
Training begins with bokuto or wooden sword. Students must demonstrate great adeptness in battojutsu and iaido basics with this weapon before they can move on to the unsharpened blade (Iaito) and finally a "live" katana.
Once familiar with the basic kata, technical and stylization differences of other Ryu (schools) such as Yagu Shinkage Ryu, Toyoma Ryu and Eischin Ryu and have practiced proper hasuji (cutting technique), students will learn and perform tameshigiri (target cutting). From there Students will don Kendo Armor and perform all kata and exercises with the shinai or split bamboo sword at full speed against multiple attackers. This infuses a sense of realism into the students training and further develops the warrior's focus in weapons combat.

Toono Jigen Ryu
This art was brought to Okinawa during the time the Satsumi Clan of southern Japan occupied Ryukyu (Okinawa). Originally it was taught to two persons (in Okinawa) during the early 1800's. One a Japanese from a distinguished family, the other the famous Okinawan Martial Arts Master known by his pet name "Toono". Master Toono passed the art to his student Metsuetsu Kashubi who in turn passed the art to two of his students, one being A. F. Walker who holds Menkyo Kaiden and is the current Soke. (See our lineage chart). This is an extremely agressive kenjutsu style that is very physically and mentally demanding and includes:
