What is the difference between Personal Protection and Self-Defense? Who is "qualified" to teach it?
The Difference
Self-defense means one is having to react to a situation that is unexpected and happening NOW! The key word is "react", meaning defense. In military strategy, no armed force has ever won a battle by reacting/defending. Personal Protection means to be proactive by identifying potential threats in order to avoid them altogether or be totally prepared to deal with the threat. The key word here is "proactive", meaning offense! Most people think that self-defense means fighting. The truth is if you are in a situation where you, as a woman, are physically fighting with a male attacker from a reactionary position, you have already lost.
Who is Qualified?
Just because someone is a "martial arts instructor", a "black belt" or a psychologist does not mean they have the experience, expertise, or training in all aspects of personal protection. Even most police officers do not have adequate training and experience in this field.
Stephen T. McGovern, our instructor, is a Security Professional. A member of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), as well as a retired U.S. Navy Anti-terrorism Instructor, Mr. McGovern is a Security Specialist and Martial Artist with over 20 years of field experience.
Our Program
Our course does include highly effective combative techniques that are easy to learn and master,
yet it goes beyond simply "if he grabs you like this, do this" techniques.
Rapists, stalkers, and other predatory criminals are nothing more than domestic terrorists and instruction includes proactive techniques used in anti-terrorism such as:
Situational Awareness & Threat Assessment
California's Self Defense Law and Codes
Home, Travel and Vehicle Protective Measures & Search Techniques
Psychology of an Attack (Predator and Prey)
Profiling Techniques (How to spot the Predator and how they choose you as a victim)
Stalking and Dealing with Stalkers
Vital Point and Nerve Point Striking
Improvised Weapons
Advanced Defensive Driving
And much more.
Attacks on young women are becoming more frequent. The threat of being attacked has expanded to professional women who are often alone when meeting clients or closing shop at night. All of the attacks that have made the recent news would have been avoided had those women been properly prepared. If you feel there is the slightest possibility that you could become the victim of a predatory criminal or a violent crime such as rape then this course is a must!

This course is open to all women, including high school age young women. You will receive real world training and you will train against men.
This is not a “modified” Karate Course. This is real and effective self –defense!
Don’t Be the Victim! Be the Victor!
Women's organizations, corporate/office groups and individuals are welcome and may schedule course blocks for weekends. Group Course Fees: $240.00 per person for the entire two-day program. Click the Calendar link for additional dates and time.
